WELCOME TO NIGHTVALE.
I definitely feel like I live half my live in the real world and the other half in Nightvale.
Stuff You Missed in History Class is really good. I love the recent episodes about the Alcott’s.

Hi Story! I think I’m fairly typical with my podcast choices—The Bugle, This American Life, Stuff you Should Know, The Moth Podcast.
I do like the radio show “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” and would recommend the podcast. That and Car Talk’s entire back catalogue. I worked in Cambridge for years and I love listen to the Click and Clack talking about caaaahs. (Boston for cars)

If you’re a gamer in your upper 20s to 40s, have a good sense of humor, and enjoy silly conversations about the random goings on of gamers, then I highly recommend Multiplaying (full disclosure, I used to be a frequent guest host and writer for the site). It’s just a little slice of fun that is totally laid back, but I call it home.

Goes to show, if you put easy to access and simple/cheap to manufacture parts in everyones hands, the only limit to learning is the person holding those parts and their curiosity. (And I could mention the system influencing what’s right or wrong to learn but that’s a whole other post on a whole other political website)

Snap Judgment, SYSK, The Moth, Strangers, Radio Diaries, 99PI, basically all Radiotopia has to offer, TAL, Wiretap is a fun CBC offering, RadioLab, TED Radio Hour, Pop Culture Happy Hour (This is a fun one!), The Nerdist Podcast, and yeah, begrudgingly, The Joe Rogan Experience from time to time.

My brother rec’d the Joe Rogan expereince and I didn’t think it was a bad episode (the psych professor and harm reduction) but long and in need of better editing. Which, my advisor keeps bugging me to listen to Data Stories since it’s related to my research, but I’m super reluctant ‘cause of the lack of editing in the early episodes.

Econ talks with russ roberts.
It’s from a right wing libertarian perspective although they interview all manners of guests and somethings such as “the economics of prison gangs?” or why is milk on the outside of grocery stores aren’t really about “the philosophy” of it but more just how they operate. Fascinating stuff.

You bring up a great point. A good podcast can only become great with the right editor in post. I struggle with newer, less tried and true, podcasts because of that fact. There have been a couple where I just can’t listen because it sounded so incredibly rough.

I just found out about a language learning program that has speakers slowly reading news stories.
News in Slow Portuguese
only has one lesson so far but others like
French
and
Spanish
have a lot more. (They also appear to have built enough of a following to charge for service whereas Portuguese is free - for now.) I noticed that in my one lesson they were good about repeating phrases with numbers or other things that might otherwise have been confusing.
I happened to find this earlier this week in a Multilingual Happy Hour thread on Backtalk that we hope will become a weekly occurrence. So if you are learning a new language, or already speak one and just want to participate, swing by Backtalk next Tuesday!
Also I've started doing a monthly post about
upcoming horror movies
on the Something Wicked blog, so if you're a horror fan come check it out!

-The entire How Stuff Works suite: Stuff You Should Know, Stuff Mom Never Told You, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Stuff to Blow Your Mind, and Stuff They Don’t Want You to Know. All are interesting, intriguing, and work-safe. (Plus they’re all done in my hometown sooooo)
-Welcome to Nightvale. I’ve taken to listening to an episode before I go to sleep. It’s very theraputic.
-Nerdist Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction. It never fails to put a smile on my face and make me feel a little queasy.
-Girl on Guy, especially if you like interviews. Aisha Tyler is hilarious and gets great insight into her guests. Also, Self-Inflicted Wound stories are great.
-How Did This Get Made. Just stop what you’re doing and listen to the Devil’s Advocate episode.

I listen to Fresh Air because I like it and also because an episode is the right length for many of my choirs. It’s also taped around here, which matters to me more than it should.
For some reason, I haven’t listened to more than two or three episodes of This American Life, ever. Not because I don’t like it: there’s a new episode of Fresh Air every weekday, and I find it hard to keep up with just that. I do occasionally listen to Here’s the Thing with Alec Baldwin, which can be very interesting because many of his guests have obviously known him for a long time and open up more than they would to another interviewer. Baldwin is very smart and articulate, and also interrupts way too much. None of those things should be surprising to people who are at all familiar with his public persona. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about him as a person, but with his voice and gift of gab, he could easily have had a career in radio.
The only other podcast I’ve listened to on a semi-regular basis is the Longform podcast, from the people who run longform.org. I read a lot of magazine articles and writers are usually pretty good at expressing their thoughts in words. It could use better editing though.
Oh—I listened to the entire run of Serial in about two days.

I’ve seen double-post that were somehow linked in a way that if I recommended one Kinja would automagically recommend the other as well. Though I guess it would be like this for every recommender... So it wouldn’t lead to your specific situation.

Did someone say podcasts?
As in, what I listen to so I don’t have to interact with real people?!
At this point I have a super soft spot for Harmontown, which is Dan Harmon’s (creator of Community, Rick and Morty) bizarre little weekly live show
I also really like Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me (and recently, Peter Sagal has been guesting on Nerdette to do Game of Thrones recaps, which are really fun)
Comedy Bang Bang is often hit or miss, but when its good, its very very good. Same with Judge John Hodgeman.
The other live comedy show-podcast is The Dead Authors Podcast.
Also, the Bugle, which is John Oliver’s awesome podcast with another British comedian friend. Its sort of like an audio version of his tv show.
Finally Super Ego is always fun. As is Welcome to Nightvale.
Non comedy wise, I really love Pop Culture Happy Hour, This American Life, Love and Radio, On the Media, planet money and the Memory Palace.
I could go on, but I feel like this is getting embarrassing.

I’ve wanted to get into podcasts but I can never really pay attention to that stuff unfortunately. Not quite sure how to explain it, either I listen to a podcast or I do what I’d normally be doing, so if the latter then the podcast would just become background noise.
In the case of listening while at the gym, it slows me down a bit, I’ve decided to stop listening to things altogether at the gym because I can focus more easily on the actual exercise when there’s nothing blocking one of my senses.
My friend has been getting more into podcasts recently (In fact it seems like podcasts have been getting more and more popular these past few months?) and tried to get me to listen to a few, but I don’t know how to tell him that it’s just background noise for me.
That’s the case for audio podcasts at least. I guess a lot of the stuff I watch on YouTube could be considered a video podcast, so I’d say check out Tom Scott for that
